British Spellings – A Must Know When Traveling

Traveling can be an adventure, or it can also be a nightmare. There is no travel without misadventures and mishaps. When I was young, my favorite traveling characters were from the west, especially Bugs Bunny and Scooby Doo. Now that I am old enough to travel on my own, what are my favorite traveling experiences?

A traveling show can be an entertaining activity for young and old alike. I grew up watching cowboy shows on television. My traveling companions were a different variety of cowboys: one who traveled by train, one who lived by the rail, and one who lived by the sea. Each group had its own unique look, with its own kind of humor. The traveling show I enjoy the most was called the Traveling Mortimer Show. It ran on CBS from January until June of 1970.

The concept of the show was that a maverick British traveler would visit all four corners of the globe. He would display his curling skills for the people of those areas. For example, he would take a few minutes to teach the people of America how to shoot a basketball, jump, and dribble a ball. Then he would move along to traveling to Canada. He would show Americans how they could improve their traveling by adding a pivot foot in their basketball routines.

Then it was off to the United Kingdom. This show featured an assortment of British expatriates including a lady known as the Captain, and two British English men known as the Pivot Foot. These guys made travelling easy by taking advantage of a loophole in the Immigration Act. Basically, if you could prove that you were originally born in England, you could claim that you actually lived in another country other than England while you were visiting there as a child. The government found this loophole very handy, so now everyone is able to use this exemption when traveling outside of England.

While the United Kingdom has its own version of the American road show, no such traveling program exists in the United States. Most of the time, Americans will just take advantage of the free lessons that are given to them in public. However, while traveling in the United States, especially in cities such as Las Vegas or Chicago, one should definitely look into the possibility of finding some British English speakers to help with their conversation. This is an excellent way to make sure that all American tourists get around in their own language and not just talk in their common tongue.

Now, you may be thinking that you already have plenty of friends with good accents who can help with your traveling needs. The truth is that no matter where you live in the US or Canada, you are still only one “limb away” from people with the same accents as you. No matter where you travel in the world, there are many native English speakers who can help you with your traveling and language needs. As long as you take the time to look for them, you can rest assured that you’ll never have any trouble getting along with the people who speak your native tongue whether you are traveling in America or England. So keep your ear to the ground and your spellings ready – the sooner you learn British spelling, the sooner you’ll be on your way to enjoying your travels and interacting with people in a language that is perfect for you!
