Social Media and Beauty

Beauty is a subjective term. What one person may find beautiful and deem it so, may be considered useless by someone else. Beauty, however, can be objectively measured through a number of different techniques and measurements. When you talk about beauty, you are generally talking about beauty in physical aspects. These aspects are not only related to human beauty but also of animals, plants and inanimate objects.

Beauty is most commonly defined as a human characteristic that makes objects aesthetically pleasing to see. Such objects may include sunsets, landscapes, humans and other artistic works of art. Beauty, with aesthetic value and art, is probably the most significant area of aesthetics, probably one of the largest branches of psychology. The field of aesthetics has been extremely important from the point of view of art appreciation and expression. One of its most important outcomes has been the foundation of the empirical study of beauty.

The most common definition of beauty is that it is “the balance of internal and external beauty.” According to the character-expressionist theory, beauty consists of “aesthetic values that arise from an inner aesthetic appreciation of human reality, that can be expressed through a person’s outer physical appearance.” This definition excludes the cultural specificity of individual differences. It also includes the ideas that beauty reflects truth, and that the real world is ruled by forces of nature. According to the character Expressionist artists, the goal of modern art is to provide a mirror for the inner beauty of a person, a mirror that in itself can be a source of beauty.

Beauty has been the topic of many debates. The debate on the definition of beauty continues to rage today. Proponents of one school of thought believe that beauty is the desire of others to have the same mental and emotional responses as the creator. Proponents of other schools of thought maintain that beauty is simply the state of being beautiful. The difficulty in this definition lies in the fact that both beauty and the desire for beauty are empirical outcomes of human behaviors and choices, two of which cannot be easily separated from each other.

Beauty has been discussed in the social media since the launch of Instagram. In one instance, the user Bobodile posted pictures of himself with his brand new Instagram Photoshopped image to say how “dazzled” he was with the application. The Instagram account for Bobodile featured him with blonde hair, blue eyes, and a rather large nose, a picture that some users took to mean that he was a model. Others were put off by the idea of having a model put out images of themselves on social media, considering it to be degrading to models and thus a violation of their work ethics.

Social media has, in many ways, taken on the role of an aesthetician, explaining why certain social media aestheticians feel the need to post their own beauty tips on their pages or websites. However, beauty is a subjective concept, one that differs from person to person and is influenced by culture, ethnicity, and personal ideals about beauty. While some may consider the works of Marina Dior to be beautiful, others will dismiss any attempt to make beauty subjective as superficial. As such, opinions about beauty continue to vary, creating an interesting place for designers to experiment with their social media marketing strategies.
