Does Dieting Work?

When talking about diet, it is easy to assume that there are only four main eating plans: vegetarianism, lacto-vegetarianism, veganism and raw veganism. But there are many more eating plans that fit into this general category of diet. A diet is a way to keep your weight under control by eating less of the foods that lead to weight gain. The four main types of diets are the following: calorie-controlled diet, glycemic index diet, GI diet and thins diet. In nutrition, diet refers to the total volume of food ingested by an individual or any organism over a period of time. It includes all the food the body needs to satisfy the requirements of its normal functioning and is not concentrated on any particular area.

Vegan diets (veganism) is based on the belief that all living things are animal or plant-based. These diets exclude all products derived from animals and plant-based foods that contain milk, honey and eggs. The Mediterranean diet is one example of a plant-based diet. The Mediterranean diet aims to include fruit and vegetables in the daily diet and leaves out meat, poultry, seafood, legumes, dairy and wine.

Low-calorie diets are popular among women in the United States. Women on this diet typically cut calories in half of their daily food consumption and focus on choosing leaner meats and low-fat dairy products. To lose two pounds per week is the goal for women on the Atkins diet, which reduces carbohydrates and fats by 20 percent in the name of burning off stored calories. The British dietary guidelines recommend that a woman have about one gram of protein per pound of body weight. The suggested protein intake for men and women are different; men need about seven grams of protein for strong muscles, while women need about five grams of protein per pound for strong bones and muscles.

Diets that consist of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes are considered to be part of a healthy eating plan. Different diets work in different ways. One way to lose weight and reduce cholesterol is by lowering cholesterol levels through diet pills. Diets that focus on whole grains and plant-based eating are less likely to cause weight gain and high cholesterol levels.

Some types of plant-based foods are difficult to digest. These include many vegetables and legumes, which contain high amounts of fiber. Plant-based foods are easier to absorb because they are not digested fully by the body. Some studies show that fiber helps lower the risks of colon cancer, but these studies are still inconclusive. Diets that emphasize a diet rich in fiber also contain less fat and more potassium. Potassium helps keep the heart muscles active.

A diet high in calories requires a source of extra calories. This can be achieved by eating foods that have a lot of empty calories. Foods such as candy bars, cookies and other snacks have almost no nutritional value. Most diet plans focus on reducing calories so eating high calorie foods like cookies or chips would not be an issue. However, eliminating them from your diet may be necessary to lose weight.
