Travel Tips: Protect Yourself While You Travel
If you are going away from home, you are in the category of people who enjoy traveling. Most people love to travel to visit new places and experience new cultures. While most people are, essentially, just running around the corner when someone is, they really are on a “long journey” when people are. Traveling actually comes from the Old French term, travail, which means suffering or even painful exertion. But pain and suffering were not the goal of traveling then, nor are they in the modern age.
In the early days of traveling, a very literal definition of traveling was pain in suffering. The concept was that people were literally suffering while traveling. The earliest known reference to this can be found as far back as the second century, as described by the Roman poet Ovid. While it seems pretty clear that Ovid was referring to the fact that some sort of physical exertion was required, the exact origin of the term “traveling” is less obvious. Still, if we look at what traveling nurses do today, it becomes clear that this was the intended meaning for travelers back then.
Traveling then, was not simply pain in suffering. The term “traveling” was also used to describe the process of receiving the necessary vaccinations to avoid catching the various diseases that were common during the time period in question. The word “covid-19 situation” refers to a vaccination that was given to travelers in the early period of this article. This vaccination was not typically made for the flu or smallpox, but rather to ward off any parasites that might be lurking in travelers’ bodies.
Today, travelers to many parts of the world still need to get tested for the flu or other diseases, and there are still the situations in which it is important to do so. Traveling abroad during the height of the flu season, for instance, requires travelers to get vaccinated against it. While it may be tempting to avoid getting vaccinated, there is no real medical reason to do so. To follow the international travel recommendations for vaccination, one simply needs to get tested.
When you go abroad, there are a number of different ways that you can request that you be vaccinated against the flu or other diseases. If you are traveling by plane, there are some specific instructions for this, as well as for dealing with the various forms of international travel vaccines. In most cases, you will either need to show proof of having had the appropriate vaccinations or have a full eight-week course of antiviral treatment before you are allowed to leave the country. Many travelers, when they use these methods to get their flu shots, find out that they need to have a higher dosage than what was recommended, which can lead to much higher costs for them when they are traveling.
As with all diseases, travelers should also be aware that the treatment process varies according to what type of virus is being studied. Some travelers will have a lower risk of catching a particular disease, such as the highly contagious hepatitis A virus, than others will. For example, pregnant women and people who have recently traveled to areas where hepatitis A is prevalent will often have a higher risk of getting the disease. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, you should consider wearing some sort of protective clothing when you travel. Travelers should always consider these factors and be sure to contact their travel health professionals before embarking on any trip.
