Toto is an American rock band, formed in 1977. The current lineup consists of Steve Lukather, David Paich, Joseph Williams, and John Pierce. Additional members include Robert “Sput” Searight, Dominique “Xavier” Taplin, Warren Ham, and Steve Maggiora. Their music is characterized by a rich combination of diverse musical influences. Their songs are rooted in the blues, but they have branched out into a variety of genres.
Toto’s eponymous debut album was released in 1978, but its popularity continued to grow. In 1982, the band released its second studio album, Toto IV, which was acclaimed and commercially successful. The following year, the group reformed, and released their best-selling albums, including the Top 5 hits “Hold the Line”, “Rosanna,” and “Africa”. In 2008, singer Steve Lukather announced his departure from Toto. The remaining members of the band remained together.
Toto has many fictional appearances. The original version is played by Pepe the King Prawn. In the Disney animated movie, the dog is played by a female brindle-Cairn terrier named Terry. Toto was paid $125 a week and is portrayed as a shape-shifting human in Sci-Fi Channel’s “Tin Man.” In the movie version, however, Toto is portrayed as a hapless teen-aged woman who has a secret wish to escape her fate.
Toto’s latest tour began in July 2010 after a short European tour. This tour was a benefit for the band member Mike Porcaro, who recently was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and is no longer an active member of the group. However, in the UK, the band’s latest tour has featured a guest musician, Nathan East. Despite this, Toto is still touring with its regular lineup.
Originally a black Cairn terrier, Toto reunited in 2010 and performed on the summer tour of the same name. They were joined by the remaining members of the band, including David Paich. Currently, the band has five members. Inkheart, a fantasy novel, and Inkheart are two of their most popular books. Toto is a very popular choice of bookworms, as it is a novel-like world.
Aside from The Muppets’ version of the story of the Wizard of Oz, Toto has appeared in many different media. In addition to the telefilm, Toto has appeared in a number of animated series. In the 1996 series Oz Kids, Toto was voiced by Pepe the King Prawn. A short time later, the band decided to reunite, and a new tour was planned for May 2012. Toto is still active in the band, but in 2010 there was not enough time to do so.
